Paul’s story
Paul Kerin, 72, began his physical fitness journey as many do – with an injury. In fact, it was multiple injuries.
In 2023, using a drill in a way he shouldn’t have been, Paul twisted his wrist and broke a tendon. This injury was followed quickly by another, in the rotator cuff of Paul’s other arm.
Paul’s road to recovery involved surgery, as well as seeing coach Joel Mullen, who started him on some light strength training. They targeted muscles under his arm and across his chest to improve his injured shoulder.
“To my surprise and pleasure, within about 3 weeks, my shoulder started to come good.”
Joel then introduced Paul to deadlifting. The pair continued training with much success, and Joel eventually suggested Paul enter a state powerlifting competition.
‘What’s a deadlift?’
This was Paul’s first question when Joel introduced him to the exercise. If you’re new to this terminology, here’s a quick guide to get you informed:
What is deadlifting?
A deadlift is a full-body strength-training exercise where a weight-loaded barbell is lifted from the floor to hip level and then lowered back down in a controlled manner.
How is deadlifting different to weightlifting?
While deadlifting and weightlifting may look similar, they are distinct exercises. Weightlifting involves lifting a barbell overhead to an extended position, while deadlifting doesn’t go past the hip.
What about powerlifting?
Powerlifting is a competitive sport that focuses on lifting the most weight possible in three different lifts: bench press, squat, and deadlift.
Paul the powerlifting champion
These fun facts are all things Paul learned on his rapid rise to championship status. Paul’s first powerlifting state competition was a victory, where he broke a national record by 30Kg. He then won two more records at the national competition in Newcastle.
Paul then joined the Australian team competing for World Masters in South Africa, because, he thought, ‘Why not?’ He returned home with plenty of prize money and medals to show for it.
As for what’s next, Paul says, ‘There’s a world record in deadlifting that is beckoning me there!’

Paul’s coach, Joel, says many of his clients come to him from a background of some sort of injury, often lacking confidence in their ability to perform.
A large constituency at Joels gym, Small Goods, is over 60. Joel has trained people from as young as 5 to as old as 78. What he’s found is that patience and listening are key to reaching fitness goals, regardless of age, gender, or injury.
Assuming you’re incapable of reaching these goals is what holds you back the most, according to Joel. Your attitude plays a big part in what you can achieve.
The idea that you can be too old for the gym is a myth. Current science supports that you can affect the way your body ages. Regular physical exercise and strength training can help keep you fitter, more mobile, and stronger for longer.
‘When you do the hard work, things get better,’ Joel says.
It’s never too late to aim high
Paul’s story is a great example of how you can make setbacks into new beginnings. It’s only been two years since Paul began his journey – and look what he’s achieved already! From rehab exercises to breaking records, Paul proves it’s never too late to start working on something incredible. Whether it’s powerlifting, strength training, or just getting more active in your day-to-day life, taking that first step could lead to something life changing.
