1. Clear walkways and entryways
Remove furniture, cords, and rugs from high-traffic areas. Even small obstacles can trip you or make you hesitant to move. Keeping clear, even paths can reduce your risk of falls, and make moving around your home feel safer.
Quick tips:
- Keep frequently used items in baskets or trays to reduce clutter.
- Read our article with more tips for decluttering your home.
- Install doorway lip safety mats, or threshold ramps, to make entryways more even and reduce the risk of tripping.

2. Boost lighting and visibility
You need good lighting in hallways, near doorways, and on stairs. Bright, even lighting helps you see obstacles clearly and reduce the risk of trips and falls.
Quick tips:
- Make sure you have adequate lighting in hallways and rooms. You can install automatic night lights in hallways, bathrooms, and bedrooms to guide you safely in the dark. Also consider smart bulbs that can be controlled with voice commands.
- Install a motion sensor light near your front door so you can see clearly if arriving home after dark.
